Poverty

  • Catholic Relief Services - Catholic Relief Services was founded in 1943 by the Catholic Bishops of the United States. Our Mission is to assist the poor and disadvantage, leveraging the teachings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to alleviate suffering, promote development of all people, and to foster charity and justice throughout the world. CRS is also committed to educating the people of the United States to fulfill their moral responsibilities toward our global brothers and sisters by helping the poor, working to remove the causes of poverty and promoting social justice.
  • Network: Catholic Social Justice Lobby - Network was founded in 1971 by 47 Catholic sisters. They have continue to be a progressive voice within the Catholic Community that has been influencing Congress in favor of peace and justice for more than 30 years.
  • International Rescue Committee - On Monday July 24, 1933 at the request of the International Relief Association, headed by Albert Einstein, an American committee was formed to assist Germans suffering. Since then this committee has been instrumental in supporting on a global level from the Vietnam war to responding to the war in Iraq with water and sanitation, and health care support.
  • Oxfam America - Oxfarm America was founded by a group of volunteers in 1970 in response to the humanitarian crisis created by the fight for independence in Bangladesh. They are also a non-profit organization that works to end global poverty through saving lives, strengthening communities and campaigning for change. They are also affiliate of Oxfarm International.
  • Franciscan Action Network - The Franciscan Action Network (FAN), a national faith-based civic engagement organization, marked its two year anniversary with the adoption of a strategic visionary document designed to guide its continued success as a potent force for integral social transformation in the spirit of St. Francis and St. Clare.

  • The One Campaign - This Campaign was launched at a rally in Philadelphia with the help of U2's Bono. ONE is a new effort by Americans to rally Americans, ONE by ONE, to fight the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty. ONE is students and ministers, punk rockers and NASCAR moms, Americans of all beliefs and every walk of life, united as ONE to help make poverty history. One as founded by 11 of America's most well-know and respected aid groups: Bread for the World, Care and DATA, just to name a few.
  • DATA: Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa - DATA aims to raise awareness about and spark response to the crises swamping Africa: unpayable Debts, uncontrolled spread of AIDS and unfair Trade rules which keep Africans poor. This organization was founded in 2002 by Bono, the lead singer of U2, along with Bobby Shriver and activists from the Jubilee 2000 Drop the Debt campaign. At the core of DATA's mission is a view that these issues are not about charity, but about equality and justice.
  • Bread for the World - In October 1972, a small group of Catholics and Protestants met to reflect on how persons of faith could be mobilized to influence U.S. policies that address the causes of hunger. Under the leadership of the Reverend Arthur Simon, the group began to test the idea in the spring of 1974. By year's end, more that 500 people had joined the ranks of Bread for the World as citizen advocates for hungry people. This small group has grown to a nationwide movement of more that 56,000 members. In September 1991, the Reverend David Beckman succeeded Simon as president.
  • JubileeUSA - Jubilee USA Network began as Jubilee 2000/USA in 1997 when a diverse gathering of people and organizations came together in response to the international call for Jubilee debt cancellation. Now over 60 organization including labor, churches, religious communities and institutions, AIDS activists, trade campaigners and over 9,000 individuals are active members of the Jubilee USA Network. Together we are strong, diverse and growing network dedicated to working for a world free of debt for billions of people.
  • DGAAN - In 2002 DGAAN was formed as a result of Bono of U2, stopping at Wheaton College for an evening appearance during the Heart of America Tour, which was designed to raise American Awareness about the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa. Since that time meetings have been held regularly at either Wheaton College of the Wheaton Franciscan's campus.
  • Upendo Village - Upendo Village, NFP is a project designed to respond at the level to the needs of women and their children living with HIV/AIDS. The project surrounds them with resources and support to improve their health, increase their lifespan and plan for the future.

The United Nations

  • The United Nations - This organization officially came into existence on October 24, 1945, when representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up what's called today the United nations Charter. The purpose of the United Nations, as set forth in the Charter,are to maintain international peace and security; to develop friendly relations among nations; to cooperate in solving international economic, social cultural and humanitarian problems and in promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; and to be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations in attaining these ends.
  • The Conference of NGO's in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CONGO) - This is an independent, international, non-profit membership association of nongovernmental organization that facilitates the participation of NGO's in United Nations debates and decisions.

Local Organizations in Wheaton, DuPage County, Chicago & Illinois

  • People's Resource Center - This organization exist to respond to basic human needs, promote dignity and justice and create a future of hope and opportunity for the residents of DuPage County, Illinois through discovering and sharing personal and community resources. Their vision is a one-stop shop for basic needs and economic access where people see and use multiple services, gain guidance to resources, and take another step to achieve financial independence.
  • 8th Day Center for Justice - The Spirituality of justice calls the staff of the 8th Day Center to envision a world of right relationship in which all creation is seen as sacred and interconnected. In such a world all people are equal and free from oppression, have a right to a just distribution of resources, and to live in harmony with the cosmos.
  • Paxjoliet.org - Is a Peace and Social Justice Ministry that seeks to provide the gospel of peace and social justice through its programs and ministries, locally, nationally and globally.
