Our Vision of Justice and Peace

History of the JPIC Office

Grounded in the Gospel mission and the philosophy of human and community development of the Wheaton Franciscans, the Justice, Peace & Integrity of Creation Office embraces the following Vision:

The Justice, Peace & Integrity of Creation Office coordinates the Wheaton Franciscan social justice concerns through the Franciscan spirit of contemplation and action. As Franciscans we are called to be instruments of peace through our work for justice and the establishment of respectful relationships with all of our brothers and sisters in creation. We are guided by our Wheaton Franciscan Wisdom Statement from the Provincial meeting chapter 2004.

The areas of focus include: advocacy, communication and community involvement in issues.

Advocacy

As faith-filled citizens, we accept our civic responsibility to pray for and advocate for the needs of our society. Advocacy efforts include emails, phone calls, letters, cards, petitions and visits to our local, state, national and global leaders.

Our community advocacy promotes a culture of life. These areas include the African trip, campaigns to make poverty history, issues to promote peaceful resolutions to conflicts, healthcare for the uninsured, environment concerns, HIV/AIDS, Northern Uganda night commuters, Darfur genocide, debt relief & trade agreements, death penalty, comprehensive immigration reform, affordable housing and trafficking of human beings.

Communication

We communicate our stances through our publications, especially Mother Earth Sister Peace, alerts and the website. Mother Earth Sister Peace provides information on issues not usually found in the public press. The experience of the Wheaton Franciscans is reflected in the articles. Alerts encourage specific actions and the web page provides timely updates and notes progress with certain actions and issues.

Community Involvement In Issues

The JPIC Office organizes and participates in meetings, forums and workshops that aim at advocating critical issues that undermine human rights and the integrity of creation. In this regard, the office finds ways to be an active member of a civic and/or religious organization that advocates for the same social justice concerns.
