JPIC Office History

Sr. Marian Cronk, OSF

Sr. Marion Cronk, OSF, led the Justice and Peace efforts of the Wheaton Franciscans for over twenty years. She continued to assist as an advisor after Sr. Sheila Kinsey, OSF, became the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Coordinator. Sr. Marion was the recipient of the Pax Joliet Peace Award in 2002. In this photo, she is participating in a ceremony honoring trees on the Our Lady of the Angels campus. The trees were cut down during the renovation and expansion process of Marianjoy Hospital, which is on the OLA campus. The trees had been a source of beauty and peace and after harvesting, they were used in the construction of the patient's chapel in Marianjoy where their beauty continues to grace us. Sr. Marion's unassuming, persitent disposition allowed her to steadily advocate for social concerns her entire life. Her sense of nonviolence was formed from her deep well of integrity. Her life was rich with a faith that enabled her to easily put things into a calm perspective. We are grateful to Sr. Marian for all of her hard work on our behalf.

The Heart of America Tour

In the fall of 2002, Bono, of U2, stopped at Wheaton College for an evening appearance during the Heart of America Tour, which was designed to raise American awareness about the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa. The Heart of America Tour event at Wheaton College was attended by 2000+ students and adults and focused on the crisis of HIV/AIDS in Africa. Without Bono's presence, many of those people would not have attended. Here, Bono is pictured with Sr. Florence Muia, ASN, (founder of Upendo Village) (left) and Sr. Sheila Kinsey, OSF, Coordinator of the JPIC Office (right). As a result of the Heart of America Tour, Sr. Sheila was involved in the creation of the Dupage Glocal AIDS Action Network (DGAAN) which continues to hold regular meetings. Please go their website for more information.

Relief Efforts in Africa

Here, residents of a Displaced Persons Camp in Labonne, Sudan, stand in front of a dwelling that they are learning to create. Members of the JPIC Office participated in a fact finding mission sponsored by Catholic Relief Services (CRS)

The United Nations

The JPIC Office is involved with the UN through connections with Franciscans International. Our efforts have focused on the HIV/AIDS pandemic, the status of women and the promotion of human rights. Sr. Sheila Kinsey, OSF, was a founding member of the UN CONGO Coordinating Committee of NGO's (non governmental organizations) for HIV/AIDS.
