Dear Friends,
Summer is a wonderful
time to pause and reflect upon the many gifts and responsibilities
from God as we view creation blossoming all around us. If we truly
believe God is present to us in our experiences and within us, than
these signs of God’s living presence call us to examine the impact
of social issues that require a response of Gospel compassion and
clarity. This month’s blog invites you to prayerfully consider
actions to make this world a better place in these areas.

Economy
The rate of new jobless
joining the unemployment rolls is decreasing. However, the number of
unemployed continues to increase. In striving to correct the economy
and stabilize employment, Catholic Charities urges the government to
not unduly burden the poor: Rev. Larry Snyder, President of Catholic
Charities USA, stated, “I call on all government officials at every
level to make prudent decisions that will minimize adverse effects
on those who have the least in our society.” In a public statement
issued to elected officials Father Snyder went on to acknowledge
that all Americans must share part of the burden of this economic
crisis, but the poor and vulnerable must not bear a disproportionate
share. http://www.catholiccharitiesusa.org/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?pid=1737
Amid the economic meltdown, charitable gifts in
US fell in 2008 (David Crary – AP) Charitable giving by
Americans fell by 2 percent in 2008 as the recession took root, only
the second year-to-year decline in more than a half-century,
according to an authoritative annual survey released Wednesday.
Particularly hard hit were social-service charities, which suffered
a 12.7 percent drop in donations at a time when most of them were
reporting increased demand for their services. (Source: Catholic
Charities).
Povety/Environment
Catholic Charities USA is committed
to reducing poverty by 50 percent by the year 2020. The poor and
economically insecure likely contribute the least to the current
energy and climate crisis. However, they will suffer both the short-
and long-term consequences from climate change. We cannot reduce
poverty without addressing our human impact on the environment and
changing climates. A major new report on global warming released by
the White House in June concludes that global warming is
real, it is human caused and we need action now to address
it. This multi-agency science report makes clear the time
for debate is long past. The House passed a version of the American
Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454),now the Senate will
consider the legislation. The voice of the poor and the
vulnerable still need to be heard. For updates and alerts

Climate Change: Why Should Catholic Charities
Care? Charities
USA, Spring 2009, Rob Gorman, Executive Director Catholic
Charities of the Diocese of Stockton Despite some of the most
productive farmlands and stunning landscapes in California, the
diocese has some of the worst environmental problems and highest
poverty rates in the area. The diocesan project includes workshops
to acquaint local parish leaders on Catholic Social Teaching,

Debt Cancellation
On June 18th, Representatives re-introduced
the Stop VULTURE Funds Act (HR 2932), a bill in the
House of Representatives that would prevent vulture funds from
making excessive profit off the debt of the world's poorest
nations. Together with Africa Action
and TransAfrica
Forum, Jubilee USA continues its campaign to stop the harmful
practices of vulture funds that prey on poor countries. Vulture
Funds buy the defaulted debt of poor countries from the original
lender, often for pennies on the dollar. After buying a poor
country's debt, vulture funds take their time, waiting for the right
opportunity to strike.
When a country receives debt
cancellation from governments or international financial
institutions, vulture funds rarely participate in the deal.
Instead they take the opportunity to sue in US or European courts to
seize the newly available resources - usually many times what they
originally paid to purchase the debt.
The Wheaton
Franciscans are members of JubileeUSA and have advocated for many
issues related to debt cancellation. Rep. Judy Biggert (Dupage) has
been very active in debt cancellation efforts. Please Call your US Representative today and ask him or her
to co-sponsor the bill! For more information

It is a great pleasure to
announce that Haiti has achieved completion point in the Heavily
Indebted Poor Countries program. This means that $1.2 billion
in debt claimed from Haiti by creditors including the World Bank,
InterAmerican Development Bank and the United States has been
finally and permanently cancelled. This is a tremendous
victory for which the people of Haiti have waited, worked and
suffered for far too long. Congratulations and thanks to all
of you for years of advocacy and activism in solidarity with Haiti
and in partnership with campaigners around the world which helped to
bring about the June 30th announcement.
Immigration
Let’s try to fix our broken immigration
system. Every time you, your family or your friends send a message
to your congressional representatives asking them to fix our broken
immigration system, you help increase the strength of our voice to
improve U.S. policies and change lives. Urge Congress to address the
root causes of migration, secure our borders, restore the rule of
law and resolve the status of immigrants in this country in a
humanitarian way. Send a message to your Members of Congress

Healthcare
Healthcare reform will only happen when
the American people clearly state this as a top priority. Here are
some suggestions to promote healthcare reform as an urgent need.
Contact your elected officials (e-Advocacy) and encourage them to prioritize
health care reform. Raise the issue for discussion within the
social, political and community organizations in which you are
involved. Use the CHA Vision for U.S. Health Care to assess reform proposals and evaluate pending
legislation. Learn more about Catholic health ministry
positions and important issues being discussed in Congress. (source:

The number of uninsured individuals in
our nation continues to grow, currently standing at nearly 47
million. Nearly 9 million children are uninsured, with the vast
majority residing in a household headed by a working adult. For more
information about CHA's position and activities on this issue, see

Franciscan Action Network is working
with Fr. Tom Nairn, OFM , Senior Director for Ethics at Catholic
Health Association to draft a set of Franciscan Principles to help
promote healthcare reform. For more information as this resource

Thanks for whatever you are able
to do to promote justice, peace and care for creation.
