Dinner & Dialogue with the Wheaton Franciscans: 2010

There is an interest in the moral questions and faith commitments related to our changing climate. This is the eighth year that we are offering a Dinner & Dialogue opportunity to highlight the breadth of the Franciscan heritage. The first part of this series is planned for March 8 St. Francis Pledge to Protect Creation and the Poor. The Franciscan response is built on our interdependence with humanity and all of God’s creation.

We recognize St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi as persons who embraced the humanity of
Christ and praised his divinity. Their personal relationship with the living God gave the
profound insight and perspective that was grounded in God’s love and understanding of themselves. They were able to perceive their call to live the Gospel life as witnesses in the political and religious realities of their times. In each of their lives they uniquely became the “mirror of Christ.”

The Franciscan spirit engages us in our efforts to look at the value diversity has in our culture. Immigration can enrich and create a more wholesome country. We will also discuss the Climate Covenant: the St. Francis Pledge to Protect Creation and the Poor. It is a covenant to protect
our planet and those in poverty who are most impacted by climate change. We will discuss how our choices and behaviors contribute to making this world a better place. Come and examine what we have in common with Francis and Clare in our world today!

The dialogue begins with the sharing of a simple meal, followed by prayer, engaging presentations and table discussions. The presenters are Wheaton Franciscans and guests who are dedicated to making connections between Franciscan Spirituality and the issues and problems currently facing our society.

Monday March 8, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. - Our obligations to creation and to the human family stretch across space and time. They tie us to the poor in our midst and across the globe as well as to future generations. Explore the Climate Contract: the St. Francis Pledge to Protect Creation and the Poor. Covenant Member Mary Ellen Durbin, Executive Director of People’s Resource Center, and co-leader of the “JustMatters: God’s Creation Cries for Justice” at St. Joan of Arc Parish and Sr. Pat Irr, OSF, M.A. in Sacred Science, Spiritual Director Supervisor with the Institute for Spiritual Leadership, facilitator of retreats and workshop presenter.
